Jerry Thomas Project
Disguised as a professor’s apartment in a dark alley, is the only of the few Speakeasy bars in Rome that requires a password and a reservation for entry. Make sure to check the website before you go as the password changes frequently. Ring Professor Jerry Thomas’ doorbell and you are greeted with the entry question through a slot in the door. If you get the password right and have your reservation set, you can enter the private bar that seats up to 40 guests. The place is lit dimly with flickering candles on each table and no flash photography is allowed, just one of the house rules everyone must agree to follow. Set with a vintage style, old artifacts are set throughout the bar, jazz music plays, and potato-infused water is offered on each table. A mix of locals and new guests, young and old have been coming here since the bar opened in 2010. First-time customers fill out a form and for 5 euro get a yearlong membership. Jerry Thomas has been ranked as one of the World’s 50 Best Bars for the last 3 years and continues to be a hit. Starting at 8 euro each, unique, delicious drinks styled after those made in the 20’s are offered as well as beer and wine. This cash-only bar near Piazza Navona is one you don’t want to miss.
